XCR Round 3 - Lakeside 10km Results

We had pretty good conditions today for the Lakeside 10K. And on a a newly certified course, we can be assured the distance is dead accurate. With 24 entries Waverley was up and about, including new member Tim Stickley, and Wendy Masters and the House debuting for the season.

We all started together – men and women and Matt in U18. This year was the first time they’ve zoned the start area for different expected times, and it seemed to work pretty well with a bit less congestion than usual once we were underway.

Up the front of the Waverley field, Smoothy rounded the first turn after 2.5K just ahead of House with Davin sitting just behind them. There wasn’t much in it but that order remained unchanged with Smoothy holding off the House by just 4 seconds to take out the Waverley 10K trophy, with Davin just behind them.

Next was Martin with his best 10K time in 5 years, then new boy Tim Stickley fresh off his ironman, and Ernie Lim under 40 minutes again for the 3rd time in a row. A big highlight was Daniel running a net time of 40:00 and smashing his pb by 3 minutes. I hobbled in with a very sore hamstring, and Martin Buden was not far behind.

Peter Kormendy continues to improve after his serious bike accident. Then we had the big tussle between Mike and Matt Harvey. They were together for the first 5K, and there wasn’t much in it as they entered the stadium. But Matt had too much speed for his dad and ran away with the family title by 17 seconds in the end. Well done Matt.

Great to see the Smurf back and getting better with each run. Followed in by Michael Jansen and a big effort by Neil Hutchins who wasn’t going to run, but Em convinced him to take on the challenge. James McEniry made it halfway but sickness and a back niggle denied him a finish.

In our womens field Niamh was our first in, with her best run of the season with Sally not far behind. Em ran a big pb, and Wendy and Jackie both pulled out their best times in 5 years. Linda was even more impressive running a pb under 60 minutes, with Petra just behind. Also a big thanks to Janice for coming in off her sick bed and taking lots of great photos.

In the teams results we had one of our most impressive M50+ teams in a long while, all under 37 minutes. But the competition was unbelievably strong today and we finished 4th. Last year we finished 2nd but were 3 minutes slower. Our W50+ team were 6th and our M60+ team were 7th. In Div 3 we finished only 17 places behind Malvern (only 1% behind). Next aim is to catch them before the season is out.

Afterwards 15 of us adjourned to the Sandbar for brunch where a mountain of food was demolished. A highlight was hearing Nick Spiteri’s Traralgon Marathon result of 3:43. I think that’s a 15 minute pb. So congratulations Nick and we can’t wait to see your race report.

Results are below and will be attached under the results section. Sally holds on to a good lead in the Winter Trophy with Martin and Niamh the main challengers.

Well done everyone and we look forward to seeing you all at Bendigo in 2 weeks time. Please let me know if anyone else would like a spot on the Waverley bus.
