AVSL Round 10 - Casey Fields

After our outstanding results last week, it was a little bit of a hangover round for us this week. With no pressure this round, our heart wasn’t completely into it like last week, and we had less people out and less events entered. We still did OK, finishing 8th, and staying well clear of the relegation zone. But lucky it wasn’t our Powerplay round. Also with our points last week, we would only have finished 3rd this week. So team note: don’t leave the Powerplay to the last round. For the season we finished = 6th on points with Bendigo. This is a good improvement on last year when we finished 8th, and only just avoided relegation in the last round.

So in the ful season results, in Div 3, Preston finished on top, and Casey Cardinia jumped up to 2nd in the last round. They will both get promoted to Div 2 next season. Wyndham and Bellarine finished in the bottom 2 and will be relegated to Div 4 next year. Moving into Div 3 next season down from Div 2 will be Mornington and Athletics South West who we should be close to, and up from Div 4 will be Sandringham and Corio (who held on ahead of Old Xavs in a countback) who we should also be close to.

Some highlights from R10:
- we had a couple of close calls with check-ins. Simone checked in on her laptop, but it didn’t seem to go through properly. Luckily she was still allowed to throw. Tilly almost missed out, but some good thinking from Amy checked her in in the nick of time.
- Some big season pb’s by Tilly knocking 24 seconds off her 3k, Nicole knocking a minute and a half of her 3k, Niamh by 3 seconds in the 800 and 6 seconds in the 3k, Christine’s long jump by 7cm, Daniel by 5 seconds in the 1500m, David Nowlan knocking 25 seconds off his 1500m, Neill knocking 21 seconds off his 3k, Ernie taking 0.08 seconds off his 400m, Clyde taking nearly a minute off his 2k walk and throwing the javelin over 2m further, and Harvs taking 21 seconds off his 5k walk.
- Craig was our biggest point scorer again with 1,282, a new season record. After racing at Aberfeldie on Thursday night he returned again to run faster in the 800m, and a sizzling 26 second 200m.
- Christine was in good form again out at Casey with 1,056 points, and with Linda missing the last round, she takes out our most points award for the season. An awesome effort Christine.
- Next highest this round was Clyde Riddoch who scored 1,282 his best points for the season , and competing at both venues (which involved nearly 2 hours of travel between them). With 2 big season pb’s in the walk and javelin, Clyde credits the weather with it not being quite as hot this round. Clyde did a lazy 7 events this round (no doubt interrupted by the long drive between venues, or he could have done 7 more).
- Niamh pulling out 768 points with 2 big pb’s in the 88m and 3k. She had to dig deep in the 800m to hold off a fast finishing Tracey, but sadly no high jump for us to see this week.
- Arun another big round with 728 points. Arun had plenty of armchair experts critiquing his triple jump, and Craig reckons he can find him another metre or 2 in the off season. Arun was also impressive in the 200m, sprinting from the sidelines to the fence to get a picture of Ryan finishing (just) .
- Ryan 668 points, and it could have been a lot more. Ryan ran a sizzling 2:07 800m to take the candy from Craig and Arun in the same heat. Then in the 200m he was starting to hit full flight with 50m to go when his hammy went. It was like one of the movies where it looks like the runner has been shot. Ryan went from top speed to stopped and clutching his hammy in a split second. Amazingly he managed to hobble over the line and still scored points. Definitely Athlete of the round. Sadly he was unable to make a miracle recovery and line up for his debut 3k for the season which we we were all looking forward to.
- Shane a solid 666 points from the discus and shot
- Yvonne one of our best performers again with 600 points for being such a good official
- Tracey 544 points in the 200m and 800m (which are very short events for her), and giving Niamh a scare in the 800m.
- Simone 526 points and a convincing performance to allow her to throw when the system pretended she hadn’t registered.
- Ernie 526 points with a 400m season pb.
- I could only hobble around today for an ordinary 519 points
- Amy 408 points from the 1 event, another great 3k
- Neill 292 points from a great 3k, and he gave Craig a good sit for the last couple of laps to let him fly buy in the last 300m.
- Nicole 264 points with teh hugest of 3k season pb’s
- Tilly 253 points with the second hugest 3k season pb. Tilly was ahead of Nicole in the first lap, then Nicole went past, before Tilly pulled away in the 3rd.
- Michael Harvs 247 points with a big season pb in the 5k walk
- Matt Harvs 198 points and was within a second of his 1500m pb.
- Daniel 196 points with a big 1500m season pb.
- David 170 points with a huge 25 second improvement on last week’s…
