XRC Round 5 - Sandown Relays

It was a cold and wet one today at Sandown. Waverley had 8 teams (well 7 teams plus Slips) and well done by all who weren’t put off by the rain today, and managed to complete the 2 laps. A specially big thanks to Jay who stood and helped in the pouring rain today with me, and made sure the M50+ results were all in good hands. Thanks also to Yvonne who is always there helping at every event.

Some of our highlights today:
- Our mens 50+ team back on the podium with a great 3rd place from House, Davin and Smoothy. House and Smoothy ran exactly the same time, our equal fastest times of the day. House ran first and was just 3 seconds down on Tony Russo from Glenhuntly. Then Davin stayed in touch with Anthony Wallace from Ghy (with Paul Prentice from Box Hill moving to the lead) and Alan Colman from Old Xavs just catching him before the line. Smoothy let Darren Templeton (Old Xavs) go in the first lap and then reeled him in in the 2nd lap to finish 17 seconds clear in 3rd place.
- Our Womens 50+ also finished with a great Bronze medal. Niamh led off with our fastest time of the day in 2nd place. Then Sally held us in 2nd. Wendy, despite some trepidations, ran really well, and was only passed by Tessa Hinds from Mentone who ran the 2nd fastest W50+ time of the day. So a great bronze medal result.
- Martin Spiteri ran our 3rd fastest time of the day, after a niggle kept him from training on Thursday. He was so fast that Ernie missed him completely, and he had to run through the finish line and back to find Ernie, who was still looking back up the course for him.
- Andrew Baxter was in great form with a 24:06 in the second leg of Div 3
- Wendy and Janice finished only a second apart at Bendigo, and today managed identical times. Not much between these 2 at the moment. Might need a photo finish at Bundoora to split them.
- Nickie Gibson was back for her debut run this season and ran really well. She was narrowly quicker than both Wendy and Janice.
- Em had a big run, also just pipping Janice and Wendy’s times.
- Julian was just 5 seconds quicker than Daniel
- Michael Harvey had a good run, quicker than both Matthew and Michael J

So we finished the day with two bronze medals and 7 full teams. A great day out:

Afterwards about 15 of us enjoyed the fireplace at the Nott to warm up, which turned out to be a much better venue than the Vale Hotel, which was our dodgy venue last year – an absolute dive.

Our next event is the Bundoora 10K which is in 3 weeks time. Hope to see you all back there.
