AVSL Round 5 - Frankston

Wow it was a hot one today. It got to 34 degrees around 4pm, when AVSL was in full swing. Waverley-Malvern thrived in the tough conditions though, with 22 season PB’s today. Big kudos to all who competed today in these challenging hot conditions. We managed our 2nd best points for the year and our best placing in Div 3 this season – a mighty 4th. When the going gets tough, WAM get going. This puts us in a pretty healthy position now, 9 points clear of 2nd last Wyndham and 5 points clear of 3rd last Ringwood. If we can do really well next round with our Powerplay, we’ll be looking clear of the relegation zone.

There is now a week’s break, with the next round 6 on Saturday 30th November – our Powerplay round (double points) at Doncaster or Glenhuntly. We’ll need all hands on deck to maximise our points as they count double. Hoping you can make it to help us out. If it’s possible to enter 3 events each we’ll maximise our potential score, but if not every event helps. Entries open from Wednesday at 5pm. So have the trigger fingers ready for the throwing events as they fill up quick, and its quite ikely that other teams might also be using their powerplay.

Some highlights from R5:
- Kate Fawkner back with points counting, and our highest points again with 1249. Last week might have fuelled her to her best result of the season 1,249 points with a big seson pb in the javelin 10.86m and 506 points in the shot put
- Just behind was our World Masters Champs medallist Craig Sanford with his best result for the season 1236. Craig ran season pb’s in the 100m 13.36, and 1500m 4:39 – in awesome form.
- Linda Buttigieg also with her season best points 1,124 with season PB’s in the 200m and triple jump.
- Christine Bridle 1,085 points (close to her best) with seaon pb’s in the 200m and high jump.
- We are lucky to have 4 athletes scoring over 1,000 points
- Just below this mark with his big season best points was Ryan Bentley with 923 points and season PB’s in all his events 100m, 400m and 1500m. He obviously coped well with the heat. He’s been having a close tussle with Arun for aggregate points, but jumped back to the lead after today.
- I managed my best points with 906 with season PB’s in 800m, 3K and shot put.
- Clyde 810, Arun 763, Jack 691, Yvonne 600, Shane 663, Neill 550, Daniel 542, Simone 539 were all racking up the points
- Also well done by Helen, Michael, Matt, Marcus, Julian and Nicole.
- Some highlights out at Doncaster were the 3K’s where Marcus, Matt and Daniel ran together for the first couple of k before Matt moved up to the front of the group with Daniel in tow. He led the group to just before the last lap when Daniel took over and just accelerated away in the last lap. So kudos to Daniel this time, but watch out for more battles between these 3 in future rounds.
- Neill gave me a beautiful sit for most of the 3k, before generously letting me through in the last lap. He ran 20 seconds quicker on Thursday night at Milers Club so was a bit tired, but we were both happy to get under 11 minutes today in the heat.
- Special mention to Harvs for toughing out the whole 5K in the heat. There weren’t many up for that event today.
- Good to see Helen back competing from what we thought could be a season ending injury

Best results today (need a season pb for a mention)
- Throws: hammer: Shane 38.81 Javelin: Clyde 17.54 Kate 10.86
- Jumps: high: Christine 1.08, Clyde 1.03 long: Jack 5.76 triple: Linda 6.60
